Hello hello! A quick and easy knit maxi skirt today, along with a very special t-shirt…I saw a black maxi skirt on Pinterest a while back and decided this was a wardrobe must-have for me. I love black, and I love maxi skirts. They are the best kind of secret pajamas, and suitable for chasing after kids and sitting in the grass 🙂
I had been sent some fabric to review, this Hemp/Organic cotton/lycra jersey from Organic Cotton Plus- it is a fairly thick jersey, with that kind of rustic slubby texture of hemp but soft, and with great recovery from the lycra. It is perfectly heavy and drapey and this skirt feels so nice to wear!
I made up a pattern for knit maxi skirts a couple years ago, using this tutorial from Cotton and Curls….guys, seriously- once you have the pattern perfected you can cut/sew one of these in 30 minutes, I timed this one! I didn’t hem it because I think it is the perfect length as is, and this fabric doesn’t fray or curl at all. Also, lazy 😉 I am not sure why I haven’t made more of these- I plan to whip up a couple more before summer.
Are you wondering about my super awesome Maker tee?? It’s from the lovely and talented Megan Nielsen! I don’t buy clothes, ever (I bought something recently and then sent it back because I didn’t like the zippers. Srsly. Sewing has spoiled me for those details!!) BUT- when I saw this shirt, and read the story behind it, I purchased one right away without any hesitation. Here’s the description from Megan’s site:
“The Maker tee is more than a cool shirt for creative types – it supports women who are fleeing human trafficking.
At Megan Nielsen Patterns we believe that every woman has the right to freedom, safety and dignity. Each Maker tee is handmade and screen printed in the heart of Kolkata’s red light district, by women who have escaped sex slavery. They work in a sheltered workshop under fair trade conditions, and are provided with health care, child care and an education. Even the beautifully soft cotton fabric is certified fair trade and organic.
Yeah. I am so happy to send my money their way!! And all that aside- it is a super soft, organic cotton tee with a nice little scoop neckline and a great fit. I want to wear it every day. I am so proud to be a Maker 🙂
*****the fabric for my skirt was provided for me free of charge from Organic Cotton Plus, in exchange for a blog post/review. I purchased the Maker tee myself and just felt like giving it a little shout out here because I think it is awesome 🙂
