Arizona Meets Nicola, and a Giveaway!!

*******Giveaway is now closed********

I am sure by now a lot of you have seen the new fabric line from April Rhodes and Art Gallery Fabrics- Arizona…it’s gorgeous!!  I have been swooning over it since first seeing some sneaky peaks by April on Instagram.  When she asked if I would be a part of her blog tour for the new line I immediately said yes!  She sent some of her lovely voile- mint with white and metallic gold triangles, so pretty!  I have been wanting to make the Nicola dress from Victory Patterns, and I knew this fabric would be so perfect for it.DSC_0851I left off the sleeves, because I wanted to be able to layer it with cardigans or blazers…but I am regretting it a little, as I think the sleeves would look lovely in this light, floaty voile!  Otherwise the only change I made to this great pattern was to pinch a little length out of the pattern at the neckline to prevent gaping…not sure that was the correct way to make that alteration, but it worked 😉  DSC_0887I lined it in a (sorta) matching Bemberg rayon that I had in my stash…I have to say my experience in garment making lies more in knits and casual clothing, not lined dresses, and if I had thought more about it I would have used a matching cotton voile for the lining instead.  I just think it would breathe better.  But that’s one of the good things about sewing our own clothes- we are always learning, right?  Luckily I don’t live in a super hot climate, so I think it will be fine.DSC_0899For the wrap closure, I used a little gold button from my stash to match the cute little gold triangles 🙂  DSC_0854I have a couple of weddings to attend this summer, and I think this will be a perfect dress to wear.  I am also dying to get my hands on the knits from April’s line- two of the prints will be released in a cotton/lycra jersey- yay!!AprilIG_grande

It all comes out later this month, but you have a chance to win some now!  I have a fat quarter bundle of all 8 quilting cottons to give away- you could make all sorts of things with these delicious fabrics!  On my list- zipper pouches, fabric coasters, fun contrasting pockets on a knit t-shirt, project bags for knitting, throw pillows…lots of fun possibilities 🙂

To enter, just leave a comment on this post- it doesn’t have to be anything in particular, but tell me something fun about yourself or something that inspires you to create.  ***The giveaway will be open until Tuesday, May 13th at 10pm Pacific Time.  Due to shipping costs it is only open to US residents, sorry international peeps- next time I promise!!***

  • Karen

Love your dress! Very summery! All the gorgeous flowers that are blooming now inspire me with their stunning color palettes. I’m taking lots of photos and will incorporate the colors into my next quilt.

  • Although I don’t need anymore fabric, I just wanted to comment on the dress. I love it! It will definitely hold up well for summer weddings!

  • This dress is beautiful! It’s my favourite fabric out of April’s collection, although the others are lovely too!

  • Love the dress and would love to win the fabric.

  • Abby

Love that dress! I can’t wait to make her party peplum dress in that fabric!

  • This is so cute! I love it on you! I like the trio of tucks or darts at the waist- what a nice detail! You can leave me out of the giveaway- I’m drowning in fabric over here! 🙂

  • So pretty! I have my eye on some of those fabrics for some projects for my new home, since I just moved. 🙂 Right now what is inspiring me to create is a motivation to have a larger hand-made wardrobe. I’m trying very hard to avoid buying cheap clothes for environmental and ethical reasons.

  • this dress is gorgeous! love everything about it. i’ve eyed this pattern so many times… gonna have to make it one of these days!

  • It’s beautiful! That voile is like butter isn’t it?

  • Oh what a lovely dress! I love the little gold button 🙂 What inspires me to create is those around me! They motivate me to make things (especially gifts for them!) Also, some fabrics are just quite the idea makers, just like this line! There are so many things I would like to do with them!

  • Very pretty!!! Seeing other people’s creations and looking at fabric gives me motivation/inspiration to sew. I didn’t realize how awesome this fabric was until you and others made garments with it, and now I’m in love!

  • Fun! Love how the print looks in your dress.

  • I love your dress– it looks beautiful on you! I pre-ordered the tomahawk knit from this collection and I can’t wait for it to get here!!

  • Ali M

That’s such a pretty dress! I don’t have that much luck making things with quilting cotton (even with the lovely soft art gallery lines) but I might have to try that pattern with some of my other fabric stash!

  • Amanda

Man this fabric line is so amazing. I’m planning on preordering some after thinking about it for weeks!

  • Cecilia

Your dress is lovely. I love all of the dresses I’ve been seeing online lately, makes me wish I were a garment maker. But, I’m a quilter. :-). Thanks for the chance to win.

  • I’m not eligible for the giveway but I just wanted to say..Love your dress!!! It’s great!

  • alyssa p

Love the dress and the gold button. My favorite time to sew is when a friend brings their machine over and we create at the same time. I guess even my sewing is social.

  • Really sweet dress! I’ve had this pattern for AGES, well before I started blogging, in the days when I was much more of a beginner (even though I still have lots to learn now) and somehow faffed up the measurements to cut the bodice waaaaaay to small, thankfully only on a muslin, but the fit was so far off that it scared me off and I haven’t been back since. You have inspired me to take a tough pill and revisit my past disaster.

  • beth lehman

gorgeous, gorgeous!! that fabric is so perfect for this pattern!! i love that i’m being introduced to so many new blogs and sewists in this blog hop!! i noticed yesterday some of the prints will be/are knits!!

  • Seeing other people’s creations inspires me to create and try new things. When I see all the cool, new designs and patterns out there it makes me want to try them in different fabrics and see how it will turn out for myself. There are so many cool fabrics coming out that it’s so difficult to choose which ones to buy.

  • Sarah

Fabric inspires me to create; I see the fabric, and it tells me what it wants to be. 🙂 Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Fern N

Beautiful dress. All of the creations that people have been making with this line inspires me so much.

  • Jessica

Love the dress! I too am excited about the knits coming out! Planning a few moneta dresses.

  • Maddy

That dress is beautiful, and I’ve been eyeing that voile for a while.

  • My daughter and I love going to fabric store together, we would admire the bolts while weaving through the aisles.

  • Your dress turned out really nice! And the lining looks great as well. What inspires me to create? My kids, nature, books, colors. Pretty random I guess. Thanks for hosting this giveaway!

  • Afton

What a lovely dress! I’m inspired by all the great projects and tutorials on blogs.

  • That looks so pretty on you! I, too, have been dying for the knits in this line!

I’m always inspired by so much….sometimes, it’s overwhelming!

  • Jo

Your dress is stunning! So many things inspire me to create the two things my hubby finds the strangest are the things I see when I look at clouds and the words to songs

  • So pretty–I’m excited about the knits too! I’m inspired by science!

  • diane

    Kelly,
W/quilting or sewing I’m inspired by those “take your breath away” first time viewing a place or thing.
For instance the Saguaro cactus, it’s sturdy green trunk w/enormous height, only grow in Sonoran desert/Tucson. The sight of the winding roads as you meander thru the cacti. THe first sighting of Red Rock in Northern AZ, and the “Ahh” feeling you get when treading upon it. I was inspired to design A quilt and the recipients was deeply touched, felt my energy and absolutely loves the inspiration behind it.
BTW your Agave triangle dress is stunning on you.

  • Vicki H

I love the print you used for your dress. I still haven’t found a pattern that flatters my body type, maybe I’m a little too critical about myself. I would love to make some totes for myself and sister with the fabrics. Thanks for the chance.

  • Sandy K

Great dress, I like the design. I have enjoyed everyone’s projects so far.

  • Stephanie

Love this dress and all these fabrics!

  • Something fun about myself is that I hate wearing pants, so I make a lot of my own skirts and dresses to wear so that I don’t have to wear pants!

  • Faith

I love your dress and the fabric!

  • Pat V.

Great job on the dress. It looks fabulous! I find inspiration in nature, architecture, and beautiful fabric!

  • barbara woods

I started quilting on my 70 birthday, thanks

  • Helen

Although I used to sew a lot of my clothes, I now look at fabric differently. I have transitioned to a quilter and see a quilt in every piece of fabric, especially anything that will work for charity quilts for a kids’ chemo unit. It has become a passion.

  • Ashley

    Love the dress!

  • Shelley C

I love the dress! I saw the pattern and was a little iffy on how it would look in real life, but I like it. It looks effortless and easy, but put together. I live in dresses, so maybe I’ll give this one a shot!

  • Brie

I wish I had time to sew every day. Especially with fabrics this fab!

  • Kelsey m

Something fun about myself…..I speak sign language!!!

  • Lisa Burger

  • I love this dress! This is a perfect example of what inspires me! I love checking out sewing blogs an finding new ideas and then dreaming about how to get them to work for me!

  • I love this dress! I haven’t seen this pattern, so thank you for putting it on my radar! I love browsing Anthro, Fossil and other shops for color and inspiration. Sometimes it’s fabric and needing to find the perfect pattern,. and other times, it’s seeing a style, but needing to tweak it to make it mine. Thanks for hosting the giveaway! 🙂

  • Emily C

I love your dress. Wandering the blogs and looking at other people’s creations is where I find inspiration.

  • Tamie

Love your dress. I’m not a garment sewer, a quilter instead, but seeing successes like this inspire me to try.

  • Mary Ann

Love the color of your dress! It looks fabulous on you. I am mostly inspired by thrifted finds. I love making something new from something old.

  • Arlene Tribble

I love this little dress! New fabrics and the Modern Quilt Movement inspired me to start garment sewing again. Several fabrics from the Arizona line would make great outfits.

  • This dress is fantastic! Such a lovely pattern & fabric combo! And I’m particularly over the moon about that little golden button – just the perfect finishing touch!
I’m really excited about these fabrics – especially the knits. I was just lamenting the other day how hard it was to find cool, contemporary, non-juvenile knit prints! The sewing gods were listening!!!

  • Jess

My gram inspires me to create. She loves to go to the quilt shop with me, helps me plan projects and choose colors, and even buys me fabric or yarn for Christmas gifts 🙂

  • Jeni

beautiful! i’m inspired because i love the process of creating so much. planning, selecting, constructing, it keeps me busy and i love it!

  • Great dress! I also have a wedding to attend this summer and would like to make my dress for it, but I haven’t made a plan yet. Getting to make clothing exactly as I want it, knowing no one else will have something just like it is definitely something that inspires me to sew!

  • Your dressed turned out really pretty, I create so I can get some alone time away from the kids 😉

  • Ruth

Beautiful fabric, can’t wait to see it in person. My daughters inspire me to sew, but also the pride in my children wearing something I made with my own hands.

  • Ella

Since I’ve become re-addicted to knitting, I think some new knitting accessories are in order!

  • I love your dress ! The need to create as self-therapy keeps me making stuff … whenever I’m not making things I know I’m in trouble! 🙂 Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Lori Morton

Love your Dress! The fabric choice was Perfect!!

Things that inspire me are the everyday things I come across during course of the day. Could be flowers, the sky colors, an outfit I see someone wearing, a magazine cover or page…even a yummy salad! lol

  • debbie

I love the color of the dress you made. It will be perfect for your upcoming weddings. I enjoy reading your posts. You are inspiring to begin making my own clothes. thanks!

  • Kathy Davis

Something fun about myself… I love to go fishing with my husband, but I never touch a fish or a worm. I have a good husband.!

  • Allison C

I drive a scooter. It’s pretty sweet. I also recently had a baby…he is 9mo now, mobile, and already getting into trouble.

  • Megan

What a beautiful dress! And an open wide pouch would be great in these prints.

Your dress is lovely! Thanks for sharing! I get inspired to sew by blogs like yours, by Pinterest, and by visits to fabric shops. When I see all these beautiful things, I want to create some beauty too.

  • reading everyone’s blogs inspires me! Love your darling dress

  • Sarah

Love this dress! So excited about this fabric line!

  • Your dress is beautiful. I’m inspired to create by the lovely materials that are available.

  • Just love putting blocks together. It’s like working a jigsaw puzzle which I also like to do.

  • Gah, I’ve been hemming and hawing about what dress to make for a wedding I’ll be attending in a few weeks, and this has been on my radar but I’ve been noncommittal about it. This is clearly a sign, however, that I need to make this dress. Yours is lovely and definitely the push I needed to get started on my own.

  • Nancy Lanier

I’m inspired by all the beautiful fabrics & the designs I see in everyday objects.

    Great dress!

  • Ruth Little

I love this line of fabric, waiting eagerly for mine to arrive. I get inspired to sew and create when I feel very content, and love to sew for others without pressure or time constraints. My color palette favorites change frequently, and this fabric just happens to hit bang on a pile I’ve been stockpiling for a king size quilt. Just love it.

  • auschick

I love looking through flickr pools and pinterest for inspiration.

  • Shannon

Wow, what great prints! Great prints absolutely inspire me to create!

  • The colour of your dress is divine. I love the print, it’s so fresh. Reading blogs and seeing other handmade creations inspires me to make stuff. I didn’t sew for a couple of years and it was all the blogs springing up the made me get out the need and thread.

  • Annette

That dress looks lovely on you! Fabulous colour – with those cute triangles adding a little highlight. Thanks for the opportunity to win a little fabric. I love the end result of sewing – I love creating with fabric. – but it has to be done barefoot while listening to great classical music 🙂

  • Vicky

  • Your dress will be wonderful to wear for summer weddings. You did a beautiful job.

  • Tina L.
